        HOSPITALITY EDUCATION IN INDIA

Hospitality industry is one of the fastest growing industries in India and abroad. Presently it employs over three million people in India and is growing at an average of over ten percent. Impetus to the the Hotel and related Hospitality industry has been provided by the entrance of Internation hotel, food and catering majors, the likes of Marrott, McDonalds, Radisson, Pizza Hut, just to name a few. With the arrival of the International majors this has become a favoured profession because of high salary and emoluments, exceptional growth opportunities and excellent working environment, opportunity to work abroad etc. A recent survey of ATEC included Hopsitality as one of the best possible careers for Indians.

Also starting with the late eighties hospitality personnel were in demand not only in the tradtional Hotel and Restaurant business but also in other industries including Hotel, Resorts Airlines Restaurants Contract and Transport Catering Tourism Fast Food Operations School Meals Hospitals Halls of Residence Shipping and theThe Armed Services

However Hospitality Education in India has remained inadequate and incommensurate with the hospitality requirements of the private as well as public sector for many years now. There remains an acute shortage of qualified personnel. Also Hospitality beign a dynamic and cosmopolitan industry requires state of the art know how and knowldege which needs to be constantly upgraded in league with International developments. This sometimes is a drawback for the government owned institutes.

Till the nineties the only education in this field that was available in India was through the government sponsored and promoted IHMs (Institute of Hotel Management ) and FCIs ( Food Craft Institute ). The government IHMs were inadequate in terms of the total seats availability and the need of the Hotel and related industry.

In answer to the need a few good private institutes in India have emerged in the private sector. Some have their own curriculum and agenda while others also have interantional linkages and Internationally recognized programs and diplomas.

Sarva North India Institute of Hotel Management is an institute which offers quality hospitality education in line with indigenous and international requirements. The study program, facilities and infrastructure, faculty, international linkages, diplomas and certifications have been designed to create a world class Hospitality Institute.
